Summer Music Workshop Series: Everything you ever wanted to know about singing - but were afraid to ask!

Week 3: Elements of Music - The elements of music can be seen as being the building blocks of music. Gaining deeper knowledge of the musical elements will enable musicians to understand any piece of music - with Variatiations Director Nathan Benavides and Children's Chorus Director, Erin Baker.

About the Instructors

Nathan Benavides

Nathan Benavides just signed on to start his second year  directing the select ensembles of the Coppell Community Chorale, but has  been teaching choral music for 15 years at the middle school and high  school level. His choirs have gained consistent success through-out his  career. In 2015, Mr. Benavides was named the Head Choir Director at  Paschal High School. In 2019 his Tenor-Bass choir was invited to perform  at TMEA. Mr. Benavides has a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from  the University of Texas-San Antonio. He also received his Master's  Degree in Conducting from Long Island University-CW Post under the  guidance of Dr. Mark Shapiro in 2015. He is a member of ACDA, TCDA, and  TMEA and enjoys singing professionally with local churches and chamber  ensembles, adjudicating, and mentoring fellow musicians. His boxer,  Cadence, serves as the official mascot of the Paschal Choir Department.

Erin Baker

Fresh off the inaugural season of the  Coppell Children's Chorus, Erin is excited to begin the second year of  the organization. She also just completed her 9th year as an educator.  Erin is a graduate of Coppell High School and graduated summa cum laude  with a Bachelor's Degree in Voice and Music Education from Louisiana  State University. She currently teaches 5th Grade at Pinkerton  Elementary in Coppell and helped found the Pinkerton Cowpoke Chorale in  2016. Erin also served as the vocal coach for First United Methodist  Church of Coppell's youth musical productions for 3 years as well as the  musical director in 2020. Erin was honored as Pinkerton's Teacher of  the Year for the 2019-2020 school year. She has a strong passion for  music and working with youth, and is thrilled at the opportunity to  combine these as director of the Coppell Children's Chorus!

Being a part of a choral group is a transformative experience  for young singers. We experience music by singing with our whole beings  and producing something truly beautiful that requires team-mindset over  anything else. Choral music transcends the actual notes and words on the  page, and is an unparalleled opportunity to connect with people of all  shapes, sizes, colors, and beliefs. In singing, they touch the music and  the music touches them. The Coppell Children’s Chorus will enrich all  those involved in the process, including the avid concertgoer, the  parent and, of course, the singer.
